Lighter and more portable equipment
Operating in the band between 30 and 300 MHz, VHF radios are typically smaller, lighter and more portable than their HF counterparts. This makes them particularly useful for smaller units in the field communicating with one another. This is a big advantage for manpack radios. The higher frequency and shorter wavelengths of VHF radios have a profound effect on radio range.
VHF radio depends on line-of-sight (LOS) propagation, and is very effective for short-range communication in situations where a transmitter and the receiver antennae can be placed in each others’ line of sight.
Barrett Communications has developed a number of VHF radios designed to facilitate transmission in tactical situations.
